What is the contribution of  Anaerobic Fungi (AF) to Nitrogen Utilization Efficiency (NUE) and CH4 emissions? 

  • Investigate the involvement of AF in NUE and CH4 emissions.
  • Investigate the factors controlling the AF community structure and activity.

Can improved NUE and reduced CH4 emissions correlate with specific AF populations?

  • Develop and/or optimize simple monitoring tools for rapid assessment of the AF community structure, NUE, and CH4 emissions.
  • Transfer the know-how to LU and NWE farming community and best practives on AF community manipulation towards improved NUE and reduced CH4 emissions.

Can dairy cows be genetically selected for more active AF populations?

  • Assess the genetic variability of hosts linked to NUE and CH4 emissions considering specific AF populations.
  • Exploit genomic variability of hosts and AF and transfer knowledge to farming communities to improve NUE and reduce CH4 emissions.
